Protect yourself from cowboy installers
The EV charger boom has brought cowboys into the trade. Here’s how to spot them, and what a proper installer looks like.
Cowboy installer
- Demands cash up frontExpect to pay on completion, or a small deposit at most.
- Prices it without seeing your setupA phone quote often grows on the day once they see your board and parking.
- Skips the fuse board checkAn overloaded board is the most common problem with rushed installs.
- Can’t show you their registrationIf they’re not with a scheme like NAPIT, there’s nobody checking their work.
- Leaves without paperworkNo certificate means no comeback if something goes wrong.
A proper installer
- Checks before pricingPhotos or a visit first, so the quote reflects your actual setup.
- Gives you a written quoteEverything written down before any work starts.
- Checks your board and earthingAnd tells you straight, in plain English, if anything needs doing first.
- Registered with a recognised schemeNAPIT approval and TrustMark registration mean the work is held to a standard.
- Hands over the paperworkYour certificate, left with you once the job’s tested.

Questions homeowners ask us
Do I need off-street parking?
Usually, yes. A home charger needs a driveway, garage or private space by your property so the cable never crosses a public path. If you park on the street, tell us and we’ll talk you through what’s possible.
Will my fuse board need upgrading?
Not always. Some older boards can’t safely take a charger. We check yours before quoting, and any extra cost is written into your quote.
Which charger will I get?
We’ll recommend one that suits your car, your electricity tariff and where you park, and explain why. If you already have a model in mind, just mention it.
How long does fitting take?
A standard home install is usually done within a day. We’ll confirm the timing for your home when we quote.
Is the quote really free?
Yes. The quote costs nothing and there’s no obligation to go ahead.
